Disney isn’t just interested in superheroes, STAR WARS, and fairy tales. The Mouse House has optioned the rights to a film adaptation of Tony Cliff’s series of graphic novels starring swashbuckling heroine Delilah Dirk. Deadline reports that the studio is planning a live-action film that it hopes to jumpstart a franchise. We’re in sore need of a female-driven action series and there are so many capable young actresses out there, if the stars align, this could be the one.
Cliff, who both writes and illustrates his work, set the series in the early 19th century and centers it on Miss Dirk, the “International Mistress of Swordsmanship.” Disney plans to film the first in her adventures, DELILAH DIRK AND THE TURKISH LIEUTENANT. It hit the New York Times best-seller list, Publishers Weekly christened it the Best Children’s Book of 2013, and Kirkus Reviews honored it as the Best Teen Book of 2013.
