SPLASH is being reimagined with a significant twist
SPLASH was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay
Mermaids are due for a comeback, no? Well, Disney sure thinks so. The Mouse House is in talks with Brian Grazer and Ron Howard’s Imagine Entertainment to reimagine one of its earliest hits, the Tom Hanks–Daryl Hannah romantic comedy SPLASH. Deadline is reporting that Channing Tatum and Jillian Bell (EASTBOUND & DOWN, WORKAHOLICS) are attached to star. (The two previously worked together on 22 JUMP STREET; Bell played sour drug dealer Mercedes.) Grazer and Howard are returning to produce.
The 1984 original found mermaid Hannah rescuing Hanks from drowning as a boy, then reuniting with him later as adults. It was a critical and commercial success, holding a 92% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, grossing almost $70 million (in 1984 dollars!), and garnering an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. The upcoming iteration would flip the story with Channing playing a merman who rescues Bell.
What do you think? Can lightning strike twice with this tale? Will Channing make a good merman? Check out the trailer for the 1984 film below and buy it here to see if you think it still holds up!
